Kalthappam (unsweetened)

Kalthappam is a rice cake mostly seen in the northern district of Kerala. It has a crispy outer covering but is soft inside.It can be had as it is , with honey , or with your favorite curry.

Preparation time : 2-3 hours (rice soaking time) +10 minutes

Cooking time : 15-20 minutes (depending on the heat and the kind of sauce pan )

Ingredients :

  1. White rice : 1 cup (soaked for 2-3 hours)
  2. cooked rice – 1/4 cup
  3. coconut grated – a little more than 1/2 cup
  4. onion – 1/2 thinly sliced
  5. salt
  6. oil

Method :
Step 1 : Wash and drain the soaked rice. Grind it in a blender along with cooked rice, grated coconut, salt and enough water. (consistently – little watery than that of dosa batter)
Step 2: Heat oil in a medium sized sauce pan. saute onion on high flame. now pour the batter slowly. Then reduce the flame. Keep it covered and cook for about 10-15 minutes in low flame.
Step 3 : when it is almost cooked, flip it over and cook for another 5 – 7minutes. (this makes it crispy on both the sides)
Step 4 : Once it is cooked, remove from flame. Let it cool slightly. Cut it into desired shapes and sizes.
