Shawarma is the most popular food of middle east. This is my way of preparing chicken shawarma at home. Chicken is marinated in few spices, either baked, oven grilled or pan grilled and cut into thin strips, placed inside the arabic bread along with veggies and tahini sauce to get the delicious shawarma at home.
I prefer to use yoghurt cream sauce instead of tahini , as my family prefers now. Thanks to food blogger Liba for this sauce recipe.

Preparation time : 30 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes
Serves : 8 shawarmas
Arabic bread – 8 , small
Lettuce – few, thinly chopped
Tomatoes – 1 big. thinly sliced
Pickled cucumbers, jalapeños- few
Chicken- 500 gms, breast or thigh piece
For marination :
Red chilly powder – 1 teaspoon
Pepper powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Cumin powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Olive oil – 2 teaspoon
Lime – 1 , juice
Yoghurt cream sauce :
Yoghurt – 1/2 cup
Fresh cream – 2 tablespoons
Garlic – 2 cloves
Salt- 1/2 teaspoon
Olive oil – 1 teaspoon
Wash and clean the chicken pieces and marinate it with all the ingredients mentioned under marination. Keep aside for minimum 30 minutes or upto overnight.
You can also marinate the chicken in baharat mix , which I have used in Chicken machboos recipe. Even this works great.
Pan grill or oven grill the marinated chicken. Cut into thin strips.
Blend all the ingredients mentioned under yoghurt cream sauce to smooth thick sauce. It can be stored in a closed container in refridgerator for 2 days.
Take the arabic bread, place lettuce, tomato, pickled cucumber and jalapeños. Keep few chicken strips on top, pour some sauce.
Roll it and serve with yoghurt cream sauce and pickled veggies as a snack or dinner.
