Chemmeen Idiyappam / Prawn Stringhoppers

Chemmeen Idiyappam or Prawn stringhoppers is a fusion dish made of prawn masala and idiyappam. Idiyappams are crushed lightly with hand and added to prawn masala. I have already shared the recipe of Idiyappam / Nool Puttu. So, if you have leftover idiyappams, this is a quick dish which you can come up with using prawns.

Chemmeen Idiyappam :-

Preparation time : 10 minutes

Cook time : 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. Idiyappam – 6
  2. Prawns – 400gms
  3. onion – 2 medium (chopped)
  4. Tomato – 1 medium (chopped)
  5. Ginger-garlic paste – 1 teaspoon
  6. red chilli powder – 1 teaspoon
  7. turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  8. jeera powder – a pinch
  9. lime juice – 1 teaspoon
  10. green chilly – 2
  11. salt
  12. oil
  13. curry leaves – a few

Method :

Step 1 : clean the prawns well. Marinate it with red chilly powder , turmeric powder , lime juice and salt. Transfer the marinated prawns to a frying pan. Add a little water and boil well on medium heat. Cook till the prawns are done and all the water is dried up. Add 2 tablespoon oil and curry leaves. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes . Switch off the flame. Keep it aside.

Step 2 : In the same pan, add 2 tablespoon oil. Saute onions until it turns translucent. Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chilly. (you may add more green chilly to make it more spicy). After a couple of minutes, add tomato. Give it a good mix. Cook till tomato turns soft and mushy.

Step 3 : Add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder and jeera powder. Saute until raw smell disappears. Then add the fried prawns . Combine well. Add a few spoons of water if the masala is too dry.

Step 4 : Hand crush the idiyappam / string hoppers . Add it to the above prawn masala.Combine well. Close the lid and keep in low flame for 3-4 minutes. Switch off the flame.

Note : My idiyappams were big, hence I took 6. you may increase the number of idiyappam depending upon its size. (take 8 idiyappams if small)

Serve it hot and enjoy !
