Prawns is one of the tastiest seafood. Anything prepared with prawns turns delicious. We have recipes for Prawns Biryani, Prawn-Lady’s finger curry, Prawn Appam, Prawn rice, Chilli garlic prawns.
Here is another dish you can add to the list is, one pot prawns pulao. Its a malabar dish so tastes best when prepared with jeerakashala rice. Well, it can be prepared with basmati rice too. Prawns are fried first and rice is cooked in the same pot to give the best flavor.

Ingredients :
For prawns marination :
- Prawns – 3/4 th kg ( before cleaning)
- Kashmiri red chilly powder – 2 teaspoons
- Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Lime juice/ vinegar – 2 teaspoons
- Salt – to taste
For pulao :
- Jeerakashala rice – 2.5 cups
- Oil – 2 tablespoons
- Ghee – 2 tablespoons
- Bay leaf – 1
- Cloves – 3
- Cardamom – 3
- Cinnamon stick – 1 piece
- Onion – 1 , large, thinly sliced
- Ginger – 1/2 inch
- Garlic – 4 cloves
- Green chilly – 4
- Tomato – 1 medium, finely chopped
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Kashmiri chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Lime – 1, juice extracted
- Water – 4 cups
- Salt – to taste
- Coriander leaves – for garnish
Note : If using basmati rice then wash and soak the rice for 30 minutes. And while cooking add 5 cups of water ( for 2.5 cups rice) . Rest of the recipe remains the same.
Method :
- In a bowl add all ingredients mentioned under prawns marination, mix well to form a smooth paste. Add a teaspoon of water if needed. Marinate the cleaned prawns in this for 15 minutes.
- Heat a cooker or pot, add 2 tablespoons of oil and fry the prawns. Remove prawns and keep aside.
- In the same pot, add ghee. Next add cloves, cardamoms, cinnamon stick and bay leaf.
- Then add thinly sliced onions and fry till they turn light brown.
- Then add the crushed ginger- garlic- green chilly and saute for 2 minutes.
- Then add tomatoes and cook till they turn soft.
- Then add turmeric powder, garam masala powder, red chilly powder, coriander powder, salt and saute well for 2 minutes.
- Add half of the fried prawns and mix well .
- Add 4 cups hot water and drained rice. Mix gently.
- Add lime juice, check for salt. Close the lid. Cook till done. Switch off the flame.
- Open the lid, gently fluff the rice and close the lid for 5 minutes.
- Prawns pulao is ready.
Garnish the pulao with remaining fried prawns and coriander leaves and serve with raita and salad.
