Thread chicken|Chicken screwdriver

This chicken starter/snack is crunchy outside and juicy inside. Its best for ifthar as well as starters. Its simple, easy and yummy recipe. I have marinated the chicken stripes in spicy masala. Its completely optional. You can just add pepper and salt to season the chicken and proceed with the method.

Cooking time : 20 minutes

Ingredients :
Chicken marination :

Boneless chicken – 500 gms

Red chilly powder – 2 teaspoons

Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Salt – to taste

Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon

Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Lime juice – of 1/2 lime
For coating :

Eggs – 2

Samosa sheets – 1 packet

Method :

Clean the chicken and cut them into stripes. ( Note: I have cut into short thin stripes. You can also cut into long stripes). Add all the ingredients mentioned under Marination into a bowl , mix well and marinate the chicken stripes.

Cook the marinated chicken in cooker or open pan till its cooked. Remove the chicken and cool them. Insert toothpick ( if short stripes) or bamboo skewers ( if long stripes) into the chicken and keep aside.

In a bowl , whisk the eggs well.

Cut the samosa sheets ( or spring roll sheets ) into thin stripes using knife or scissor, holding all together in a stack.

Dip the chicken in the egg and roll over the samosa stripes well. Press the coated chicken gently with fist. Follow these steps for all the chicken stripes and deep fry on medium flame till golden brown.

Crunchy chicken screwdriver is ready to serve with favorite dip.

Chicken Bites / Chicken Pops

Chicken bites or chicken pops is yet another snack that can be prepared for ifthar . It is also called ‘toothpick chicken’ as the ingredients are pricked into the toothpick before frying. Eating tip – Pop the entire chicken bite at once into the mouth to relish the real taste of it.

  1. Chicken boneless – 50-100 gms
  2. onion – 1 medium (cut into chunks)
  3. potato – 1 small
  4. egg – 1
  5. maida/ all purpose flour – as needed
  6. bread crumbs – as needed
  7. Green masala paste (optional) – 1 teaspoon
  8. pepper – 1 teaspoon
  9. turmeric powder – 1/5 teaspoon
  10. salt
  11. oil

Method :

Step 1 : Cook chicken with pepper, turmeric  and salt.Once cooked, cut it into bite / chunk size pieces. Peel and Cook Potato with salt. once cooked, cut potato also into bite/chunk size pieces.

Step 2 : (Optional) Apply  Green masala paste to chicken pieces ( this is to make it spicy).If you don’t have green paste , just make a paste of 1 greenchilly, ginger-garlic paste (1/5 teaspoon) , 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder, 3-4 mint and coriander leaves.

Step 3: Take a toothpick . Prick chicken , onion , potato into it.

Step 4 : Break open an egg into a bowl and whisk it. Take a little maida and breadcrumbs in separate bowls. Dip the pricked chicken pops into egg; then dust it with maida. Then again dip it in egg and roll it over breadcrumbs


Step 5 : Heat enough oil in a kadai.When it is hot, deep fry the chicken pops until golden brown on all the sides.


The Chicken pops / chicken bites are ready!!! Serve it with your favorite dip.

Cheesy chicken balls

Here is one more delicious chicken snack recipe. The masala is same as of Chicken cutlet. Adding shredded mozzarella cheese to these , makes it even more delicious.

Even these can be freezed upto a month just like Chicken fingers, Chicken cutlet .

Preparation time : 10 minutes

Cooking time : 20 minutes

Serves : 25 cheese chicken balls

Ingredients :

Boneless chicken – 500 gms

Salt – salt to taste ( to cook chicken and to prepare masala)

Turmeric – a pinch

Onion- 1 large, finely chopped

Ginger garlic green chilly paste – 1 teaspoon

Pepper powder -1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Coriander leaves – few, finely chopped

Lime juice – of 1/2 lime

Potato – 1 large

Mozarella cheese – 1/2 cup, shredded ( or as per your wish)

For coating :

Maida ( all purpose flour ) – 1 cup

Egg – 2

Breadcrumbs – 1.5 cups

Salt – a pinch

Method :

Wash and clean the chicken. Add salt, turmeric powder and cook the chicken. Shred them and keep aside.

Boil the potatoes.

In a fry pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil. Saute onion till they turn translucent. Then add ginger garlic green chilly paste. ( You can also add 2 finely chopped green chilles and 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste) . Saute till the raw smell disappears.

Then add pepper powder, garam masala powder and saute for a minute. then add the shredded chicken and salt. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and lime juice. Mix very well and switch off the flame.

In a large bowl, mash the boiled potatoes very well. add the chicken masala and mozzarella cheese. Mix well.

Apply oil on the palm and make small balls.

Whisk eggs in a bowl . Keep breadcrumbs in another bowl . Take maida in a bowl and add a pinch of salt and mix well.

Coat the chicken balls in the maida , then dip in the egg, then coat well with breadcrumbs. Follow this step for all the chicken balls.

Deep fry these chicken balls on medium heat till they turn golden brown.

You can even cook these in the paniyaram pan. Add little oil to the paniaram pan and cook these balls on low to medium heat. turn them ocassionally till all sides turns golden brown.

Enjoy these cheesy chicken balls with your favorite dips. 🙂

Chicken fingers

Chicken fingers is finger shaped chicken nuggets. The same can be prepared in any desired shape, the recipe remains the same. Kids and elders all love to have these as snacks at home, lunch box or even for picnics. Its simple and easy to prepare, add your favorite spices according to your taste.  You can even add some shredded mozzarella cheese while mixing to prepare these fingers to make it cheesy chicken fingers. Kids love it.

Its best for ifthar too because you can prepare this raw chicken fingers and freeze it up to a month.

Preparation time : 10 minutes

Cooking time : 10 minutes

Serves : 25 pieces

Ingredients :

Boneless chicken – 500 gms ( or minced chicken)

Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon

Pepper powder – 1 teaspoon

Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Chilli flakes – 1 teaspoon ( optional if you want to make it spicy)

Cornflour – 2 teaspoons

Salt –  to taste

For coating :  

Maida – 1 cup or more

Salt – a pinch

Pepper – 1/4 th teaspoon ( optional)

Egg – 2

Breadcrumbs –  a big bowl

Method : 

Clean  and pat dry the boneless chicken. Mince it in the blender .

In a bowl , add minced chicken, ginger garlic paste, garam masala powder, pepper powder, chilly flakes, cornflour and mix well. knead it like dough.

To prepare cheesy chicken fingers,  add shredded mozzarella cheese, while mixing.


Apply little oil on both palms and make finger like shape from the chicken mix.

In a bowl, add maida, salt, pepper and mix well.

In another bowl, break open the eggs and whisk well and keep.

In another bowl, add breadcrumbs.


Dip the chicken fingers in the maida mix and coat well. then dip well in the egg. Then coat well with bread crumbs. Follow this for all the fingers.

At this point you can put these in a zip bag or freezer safe boxes and freeze it for a month.


Deep fry these fingers in a low-medium heat. occasionally turn them. When it turns golden brown, remove it from the heat.

Serve these yummy chicken fingers with ketchup .

Mushroom chilly

This is indo-chinese style mushroom chilly. Very simple and quick recipe with few ingredients. Serve it with any Chinese rice dishes, Indian rice dishes or roti . Or just have it as starters along with some salads/soups.

Preparation time : 5 minutes

Cooking time : 15 minutes

Serves : 2

Ingredients :

Mushrooms – 200 gms
For batter :

All purpose flour – 1/2 cup

Rice flour – 2 tablespoons

Salt – 1/2 teaspoon

Pepper powder – 1/2 teaspoon

For chilly masala:

Onion – 1 medium. thinly sliced

Capsicum – 1/2 , cubes

Green chilly – 4, slitted

Ginger – 1/2 inch, finely chopped

Garlic – 2 cloves, finely chopped

Soya sauce – 1 tablespoon

Vinegar – 1 teaspoon

Chilli sauce- 1 teaspoon

Tomato ketchup – 1 teaspoon

Salt – a pinch

Pepper – 1 teaspoon

spring onion – few, finely chopped

Method :

In a bowl, put all the ingredients for batter. Make a thick batter by adding enough water. Consistency should be thick enough to coat the mushrooms well.

Chop the cleaned mushrooms into halves or quarters , dip in the batter, and deep fry till light golden brown on a medium heat. Keep aside.

In a kadai or sauce pan, heat 2 tablespoons oil, add chopped ginger , garlic and saute for a minute. Then add onion and saute for a minute. Then add green chilly, capsicum, soya sauce, chilly sauce, vinegar, pepper powder, ketchup, salt and saute for a minute. Then add the fried mushrooms and give a good toss. Add spring onion and mix well. switch off the flame.

Mushroom chilly is ready to serve with Vegetable fried rice , Egg Fried Rice or any rice of your choice.

Dinner Lunch Starters

Spicy mutton chops| lamb chops

Here is the recipe for spicy mutton/ lamb chops in Indian masala. I prefer to cook the mutton chops in masala and then pan fry with little oil just enough to roast the sides of the chops. According to this recipe you can cook the chops and freeze it for later use. One of the best recipes for parties. Few basic ingredients are used in this and its a very easy as well as quick recipe.

Preparation time : 10 minutes

Cooking time : 20 minutes

Serves : 4

Ingredients : 

Mutton chops/ Lamb chops – 8 pieces

Kashmiri red chilly powder – 2 tablespoons

Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon

Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala powder – 1 teaspoon

Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon

Lime – 1, juice extracted

Salt – to taste

Oil – to shallow fry the cooked chops

Method : 

Wash and clean the mutton chops.

In a bowl add all ingredients except oil. Mix well to make a thick masala. Marinate the chops in this masala for 10 minute.

Take a pressure cooker, add the marinated chops along with 1/4th cup of water. Cook for 4-5 whistles ( depends on the quality of mutton too) or till the mutton is completely cooked . Let the pressure settle down. Open the lid and switch on the flame on high and cook till all liquid is absorbed. The mutton chops should be completely dry.

In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and fry the cooked mutton chops on medium – high heat till nice dark brown color on both the sides.

You can even grill the marinated chops in the oven. It would take around 30 – 45 minutes to get the well roasted mutton chops.

Mutton chops is ready to serve with Soups & Salad , Rice Dishes etc.
